World Patient Safety Day

The World Health Organization World Patient Safety Day recognizes patient safety as a global health priority on September 17, 2021. Globally, “1 in 10 patients is harmed while receiving hospital care and 50% of these incidents are preventable.” In just the United States, preventable medication errors cost the country over $21 billion every year across all medical care settings. Strikingly enough, a recent Johns Hopkins; patient safety experts found that potentially more than 250,000 deaths annually are due to medical error.

For females, in particular, these risks are even higher. Approximately 800 women in the US die each year during pregnancy and within 42 days after delivery. In Illinois, the death of a pregnant woman occurs every five days. “More than 4 out of 5 pregnancy-related deaths were preventable.”

This harm and these fatalities are both unacceptable and preventable. But only 2% of patients ever file suits against the doctors engaging in malpractice. If you or a loved one was harmed by a doctor or healthcare worker, contact us at Deratany & Kosner. We put our experience and resources to work for victims and families of medical malpractice.
