National Senior Citizens Day Honors Unique Contributions and Legal Vulnerabilities of Older Adults

The abuses and personal injuries that are faced by senior citizens, as well as how their age impacts litigation, are worth discussing.

August 23, 2021

Throughout our portfolio of litigation, Deratany & Kosner has displayed a firm commitment to fighting for justice for people who are abused in vulnerable situations. August 21st was National Senior Citizens Day – a day where we celebrate the older adults in our lives and in our careers fields, including senior citizens who paved the way for the precedents we use to argue our cases to this day. But National Senior Citizens Day also reminds us that we’d be remiss to not spotlight the epidemic of elder abuse that happens every day in this country.

A smiling grandmother is embraced by her happy grandchildElder abuse is shockingly underreported. Despite the fact that 5 million seniors are subject to abuse by caregivers or even their own children every year, only 1 in 24 cases of elder abuse end up getting reported. Deratany & Kosner knows that any abuse that occurs while a vulnerable person is under the care of the state or an approved caregiver is especially vile.

Throughout our decades of experience as personal injury attorneys, we’ve seen how important it is to familiarize ourselves with the abuse that may be impacting our clients. Spotting the signs of elder abuse is critical to our duties as attorneys. Learn more about what elder abuse can look like below, and if you’re concerned that you or a loved one might be falling victim to this heinous abuse, contact us today for a free consultation.
