Michael Kosner has been practicing law in Chicago since 1998. After graduating from the University of Miami, he practiced in southern Florida before returning to Chicago, where he was raised in the northern suburbs. In 2016, he became a partner at Deratany & Kosner.
While with Deratany & Kosner, Mr. Kosner has worked on a number of notable cases. In 2016, he, along with Mr. Deratany, represented Ronald Willis Jr. in a medical malpractice lawsuit brought against Mount Sinai Medical Hospital of Chicago in the amount of $8 million. Mr. Kosner and Mr. Deratany were able to obtain justice for the untimely and preventable death of Mr. Willis’ mother Joya Pipkin. Ronald Willis Jr.’s mother, Joya Pipkin, died at the age of 41 as a result of a failed code blue system after she was given sedation on January 16, 2009.
In 2019, Mr. Kosner represented the estate of Robbin Myers, a young father of eight children that had gone to the emergency room at Advocate South Suburban Hospital on June 9, 2014 with the worst headache of his life. The plaintiff was discharged from the emergency room with a severe headache. Imaging did not show anything wrong with the brain. The patient went home and died of a cerebral aneurysm 24 hours later. The jury trial lasted for six days, and the jury deliberated for just under 2.5 hours before returning their verdict for the Plaintiff in the amount of $6,000,000.
