A LAW FIRM THAT PROTECTS THE RIGHTS OF FOSTER CARE CHILDREN
IT’S UP TO ALL OF US TO PREVENT CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT
Children are among the most vulnerable members of our society. We all share a responsibility to protect them if they are being victimized. The foster care abuse and negligence attorneys at Deratany & Kosner take this responsibility quite seriously.
If any of us suspect a child is being neglected or abused, we believe we have a moral and ethical duty to report it. Simply making a confidential phone call can set the wheels in motion for an investigation that removes the child from an abusive or neglectful home and takes action against the adults who are responsible.
In fact, some people are bound by law to report suspected abuse or neglect. If you are a professional in the field of health care, education, social work or law enforcement, the state of Illinois requires you to report any suspected neglect or abuse of a child. This includes people who work in:
- Health care – doctors, physician assistants, surgeons, nurses, EMTs, psychiatrists, residents, interns, dentists and dental hygienists, hospital personnel
- Education – teachers, school staff members, day care and nursery school staff
- Social work – child care workers, representatives of the Department of Children and Family Services, Public Health and other state agencies
- Law enforcement – police officers, probation officers, truant officers
Reporting suspected abuse or neglect is easy to do. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has a 24-hour child abuse hotline. Simply call 800-252-2873. You don’t have to give your name.
What if you’re not sure? That’s a very common concern. Many people don’t report suspected abuse or neglect for that reason. But if a child is being abused or neglected, you have the chance to do something about it. If you think something is wrong, call the hotline. You can’t get in legal trouble for making a call in good faith. You may be able to make a difference and protect a child from further harm.
ATTORNEYS DEDICATED TO HELPING CHILDREN AND FAMILIES
Deratany & Kosner knows that too many children suffer at the hands of irresponsible adults. Physical abuse. Sexual abuse. Emotional abuse. Neglect. This affects their well-being and development, and can cause significant problems. It also affects adoptive and foster care families who take children in after abuse or neglect.
Our attorneys represent foster families who were injured after not being informed about a child’s behavioral or family history issues. We also represent children who were abused or neglected by a foster care family. We help families and children in Chicago and throughout the country.
The best thing for a child is to be placed in a safe, nurturing and loving home. But everybody involved should know what the child has been through in the past. This lets families know the risks and also helps them take appropriate steps to protect themselves and other family members as necessary.
The first step in stopping abuse and neglect is reporting it. If it’s never reported, abuse and neglect continues. Children suffer. Families suffer. And people get hurt. In some cases, children lose their lives from severe abuse.
