March is recognized as Brain Injury Awareness Month, an important time to raise awareness about the causes, effects, and prevention of brain injuries. A brain injury is an injury that occurs when the brain is damaged due to a blow to the head or other trauma. Brain injuries can be mild, such as a concussion, or severe, such as a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Traumatic brain injuries are a major cause of death and disability in the United States, with approximately 2.8 million people experiencing a TBI annually. The CDC identified TBIs as a major cause of death and disability in the United States, reporting an average of 611 TBI-related hospitalizations and 176 TBI-related deaths per day.
 

Brain injuries can have a significant impact on the lives of those affected by them. Depending on the severity of the injury, symptoms may range from mild to severe and can include headaches, dizziness, confusion, memory loss, seizures, and coma. Some people may experience long-term effects such as cognitive impairment, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This is why prevention is important.
