VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — Northwestern Indiana authorities have charged an East Chicago man with five felonies in the death of a highway construction worker who was struck by a car.
Twenty-one-year-old Ricardo Bustos appeared stunned Monday when he learned during his initial court appearance that the construction worker he’s accused of hitting had died.
A Porter County judge entered not guilty pleas on Bustos’ behalf for the charges, which include leaving the scene of a serious accident.
Bustos remained jailed Tuesday on a $10,000 cash bond.
Police say Bustos made an illegal U-turn in a construction zone on Interstate 94 near Burns Harbor on Friday before hitting 49-year-old Roger Sadler. The Michigan City man died Sunday.
