Jay Paul Deratany
Only four years after graduating from DePaul Law School, Jay Paul Deratany decided to start his own practice, thus forming the Law Offices of Jay Paul Deratany & Associates in 1992.
His personal philosophy has always been to help people combat injustice and subjugation by big business and is one of the main reasons why he chose personal injury and medical malpractice as his concentration.
A series of large victories in the past dozen years has certainly illustrated Mr. Deratany’s dedication to his professional calling. His devotion to helping people extends into his personal life with volunteer work as a past board member of the Perspectives Charter School and frequent charitable giving to many causes, especially Community Support Services, Greenpeace and several human rights organizations.
Kara Skorupa
Ms. Skorupa was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Florida in 1991 and then earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Florida’s College of Law in 1994. In 1996, Kara Skorupa earned her L.L.M. in Health Law from the DePaul University in Chicago which is an advanced post-doctoral law degree. Prior to completing her L.L.M., Ms. Skorupa gained experience in real estate law and personal injury while working in the Chicago legal community.
After completing her formal education, Ms. Skorupa became a staff attorney with the Social Security Administration’s Office of Hearings and Appeals in Chicago which allowed her to utilize her specialized education. Ms. Skorupa received even more training while with the Social Security Administration and wrote decisions for administrative law judges across the entire country.
Nathan Polum
Nathan Polum is originally from Stevens Point, WI. Nathan attended Ripon College in Wisconsin where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Sociology-Anthropology. Nathan attended Chicago Kent College of Law. In his final year at Chicago Kent, Nathan conducted research for his senior seminar on adoption negligence. Nathan has gained legal experience at several other law firms throughout Chicago, which have focused on a variety of legal practices including employment law, product liability, personal injury and medical malpractice.
At The Deratany Firm Nathan focuses on adoption negligence, personal injury, medical malpractice, and environmental law. Nathan has assisted Mr. Deratany with a wide variety of cases, including a trial involving the death of a legally blind man who was killed by a train which resulted in a multi-million dollar verdict.
Patrick Degnan
Patrick is originally from Pittsburgh, PA. He graduated from Miami University in 2006 with a B.A. in English Literature. After graduating from Miami, he gained experience at other personal injury firms in Chicago. Patrick then began law school at The John Marshall Law School in January of 2007. In the summer of 2008 he served as a judicial extern for Chief Judge James G. Carr of the Northern District of Ohio. After concluding his externship, he clerked for other firms in Chicago, where he concentrated primarily on the fields of personal injury and workers’ compensation. Patrick recently began clerking for The Deratany Firm. He is pleased to be face the many exciting challenges that will be presented to him as he begins work with this firm. After graduating from law school he hopes to remain in Chicago and continue to focus on the areas of personal injury and medical malpractice.
Ira Katzman
Ira J. Katzman concentrates his area of practice on personal injury law, including: auto accidents, medical malpractice, premises liability, and construction negligence. Mr. Katzman is also assisting Mr. Jay Paul Deratany with the Crestwood, water contamination litigation. Mr. Katzman is involved in all aspects of the litigation process with full responsibility for the preparation of cases for trial.
Mr. Katzman is from Memphis, TN and received a B.A. from the University of Tennessee. He then earned his J.D. from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2008.
